How to Invest in the Dangote Refinery IPO From the US — Without Getting Scammed

A step-by-step walkthrough for diaspora investors, based on a real account setup and funding run.

Last updated: September 15, 2026

This is positioned as the largest IPO in African history, and that level of attention also creates a high-risk environment for scams, cloned portals, fake agents, and bad information. Most free guides repeat the same surface-level facts. This one is structured around an actual completed setup and funding process — what worked, what caused friction, where fees showed up, and what to verify before sending money.

Platform verification

How to Verify Any Platform Before You Send Money

The most reusable skill in this process is not picking a particular app. It is learning how to independently verify the claims a platform makes about its regulatory status, broker relationships, and access to the Nigerian market.

The method

  1. Identify the licensed broker, dealer, custodian, or trading partner behind the platform.
  2. Check the regulator or exchange listing independently.
  3. Look for third-party reporting that confirms the relationship.
  4. Make sure the platform’s own marketing claims line up with those independent sources.
  5. Do not treat social proof, influencer posts, or app-store presence as regulatory verification.

In the real example used for this walkthrough, the verification process focused on Daba Finance’s stated partnership with Coronation Securities Limited, described as a Nigeria SEC-registered broker/dealer and NGX trading license holder.

Instead of relying on Daba’s own site, the relationship was cross-checked against multiple independent publications, including TechCabal, allAfrica, ThisDay, and Business Post Nigeria.

The point is not that every reader should use the same platform. The point is to build a repeatable habit: verify the regulated party behind the platform before you trust the platform with money.

Setup

Step by step

A practical sequence that keeps identity, account access, and funding organized from the start.

Create a dedicated email for financial accounts

Use an inbox separate from your day-to-day email so investment-related logins, confirmations, support tickets, and transfer records stay isolated and easier to monitor.

Create a platform account and complete KYC with your US ID

Follow the identity-verification workflow carefully and make sure names, dates of birth, addresses, and document details match exactly across the records you submit.

Set up a funding method

For the tested workflow, Wise was used as the transfer option. SWIFT or bank transfer can be meaningfully cheaper than Apple Pay or card funding, which can run 6%+ in fees depending on the transaction path.

Submit verification documents once

After you upload the required proof for a deposit or transfer, avoid sending another version unless support specifically requests it.

Don’t do what I did: I submitted two different documents for the same deposit because I wasn’t sure the first one registered, which created a duplicate-entry mixup I had to sort out with support. Submit once, then wait.

Wait for identity verification, then AML/investing unlock

These checks can take time. A pending status does not necessarily mean something is wrong, so avoid creating duplicate tickets, accounts, or submissions while verification is still processing.

Funding

Funding math & fees

Start with the number of shares you want, convert that total naira amount using the live NGN/USD rate, and then add the actual transfer or card fee on top.

Basic calculation

Target shares × ₦525 = Total NGN needed

Total NGN ÷ live NGN/USD rate = Base USD amount

Base USD + transfer fees = Total USD to fund

Always use the live exchange rate available at the time you are actually funding. Do not rely on a screenshot, social post, or rate quoted days earlier.

Bank transfer / SWIFTMeaningfully cheaperBetter fit for larger transfers when time is less important than minimizing fees.

Safety

Scam red flags specific to this IPO

High-profile public offers attract impersonators. Treat any shortcut, urgency tactic, or off-platform payment request as a reason to stop and verify.

  • WhatsApp messages offering a “guaranteed slot” or claiming special access.
  • Fake portals or cloned websites designed to look like an official investment page.
  • Unauthorized “agents” asking you to send funds directly to a personal or unrelated account.
  • Pressure to send money outside official approved channels or before you complete normal KYC and onboarding.

Nigeria’s SEC has issued specific investor warnings around unauthorized schemes and impersonation activity. Use regulator and exchange records as primary verification sources whenever possible.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to common setup and risk questions for diaspora investors. Platform rules and eligibility can change, so confirm current requirements before funding.

Can I invest without a Nigerian passport?

Potentially, yes. Some platforms support non-resident onboarding using a valid US government-issued ID, but eligibility and KYC requirements vary by platform and jurisdiction. A Nigerian passport should not be assumed to be universally required or universally unnecessary — confirm the current onboarding rules with the regulated provider you plan to use.

What if I get a message claiming to offer guaranteed or early access to shares?

Treat it as a red flag until independently verified. Do not send money, identification documents, login codes, or banking details through an unsolicited message. Check the offer against the official Dangote IPO portal, SEC Nigeria, and the regulated broker or platform’s official website before taking any action.

Is my capital protected if the naira loses value?

No automatic protection should be assumed. If the investment is priced in naira, exchange-rate movements can affect what your holdings are worth when measured in US dollars. Even if a future payment or dividend can be converted to USD, currency exposure can still increase or reduce your overall return.

Do I need a Nigerian bank account to participate?

Not necessarily. Some approved platforms may support eligible non-resident investors through international funding rails, multi-currency transfers, or other regulated arrangements. The exact process depends on the platform, your residency, KYC status, and the offer’s current rules, so verify the accepted funding path before sending money.
